Why Ujjayi Breath?

If you’ve practiced with us, you have heard that unique group breath sound! It is known as Ujjayi breath. It is an intentional breath technique that holds tremendous value physically and mentally!

The word Ujjayi means “victorious breath.” It involves gently constricting the muscles in the back of your throat while breathing in and out through your nose. The result? A sound resembling ocean waves, or wind through trees, (or maybe more like Darth Vader to your ears).

Why we love it:

It makes your breath audible, which is a game-changer for staying present. When practicing in class, the sound of the breath is a powerful tool for maintaining moment to moment awareness. It also signals pacing and timing for keeping in sync with the group.

It also holds many physiological benefits:

  • regulates body temperature (comes in handy for hot yoga)

  • improves oxygen efficiency (lengthens the breath creating a down-regulation effect)

  • boosts stamina (encourages steady, balanced breathing which helps with endurance)

  • stimulates the vagus nerve (this has a calming effect)

  • engages deep core musculature instead of upper respiratory muscles (less neck/shoulder tension)

How to do Ujjayi breath:

  1. Inhale slowly through your nose.

  2. As you exhale, gently constrict the back of your throat—as if you were whispering the word “ha” or fogging a mirror with your mouth closed.

  3. Keep the breath even and smooth.

  4. Repeat. Try this for a couple minutes a day. Like any other practice, it gets easier and more effective with time!
