Why Group Breath?
If you have practiced with us here at PPY, then you know that we do something special: we sync the class to the group breath! This is not designed to be performative in any way — instead, its core purpose is to invite and sustain a high level of awareness, mindfulness and discipline on your mat. How so? Let’s dig in!
Simply put, awareness is the act of noticing. Noticing your own breath is foundational to this concept. When you notice your own breath, that’s awareness! When you notice your breath AND link it to the group that is present in the room, you are using it as a potent tool to stay HIGHLY aware of and connected to the present moment. Bingo!
Mindfulness is awareness with intention and attention. Synchronizing with the group breath requires that you no longer breath out of habit or personal preference. Rather, you use your breath awareness in a specific, focused way. Each breath asks for the same amount of attention and intention. When your mind strays (which is totally normal), the group breath guides you back to right now. Team effort at its best!
Finally, synchronized group breath is a form of discipline. Matching the pace and length of the group breath isn’t always easy. You may need to slow down when you want to rush. You may need to soften when you have the impulse to cling. You have the choice to remain calm amidst distraction or tension. You can let ego and control take over or surrender to the collective experience. The ultimate training ground for life!
